Pulitzer Arts Foundation: Art in a Temple of Concrete and Light

Some museums you visit for the art; the Pulitzer Arts Foundation you visit for the silence around it. Founded by Emily Rauh Pulitzer and opened in 2001 in a luminous building by Pritzker Prize architect Tadao Ando, the Pulitzer presents intimate, scholar-crafted exhibitions of art from across centuries — always free, never crowded, in galleries washed with natural light.

The foundation’s programs reach beyond its walls: the SLSO’s ‘Live at the Pulitzer’ chamber series pairs contemporary music with the exhibitions, and the reflecting pool court, with its Richard Serra sculpture, is among the most contemplative spots in St. Louis. Exhibitions change two or three times a year, each installed with meditative precision.

It is Grand Center’s quiet masterpiece.

The Pulitzer Arts Foundation is at 3716 Washington Boulevard. Exhibitions at pulitzerarts.org.
