St. Louis helped invent jazz’s river story ā and Jazz St. Louis keeps the beat. From the Harold & Dorothy Steward Center for Jazz in Grand Center, the nonprofit presents the Jazz at the Bistro series: intimate sets by the music’s leading artists, steps from Powell Hall and the Fox.
What began in 1995 as a humble concert series has grown into one of America’s model jazz organizations, pairing its stage with deep education work ā the JazzU program trains the region’s young players with the pros, and community programs carry the music into schools across the metro. On show nights the Bistro’s candlelit room does what jazz rooms are for: listening, close up, together.
The river gave St. Louis the blues; this room gives it jazz, nightly.
Jazz St. Louis is at 3536 Washington Avenue. Calendar at jazzstl.org.
