Anselm Kiefer’s ‘Becoming the Sea’ Fills SLAM’s Sculpture Hall

The Saint Louis Art Museum’s soaring Sculpture Hall has a monumental new presence: Anselm Kiefer’s ‘Becoming the Sea,’ an installation of the German master’s vast, material-rich paintings, on view through spring 2027.

Kiefer’s canvases — built from paint, straw, lead, ash and earth — wrestle with history, myth and memory at architectural scale, and in SLAM’s grand hall they converse with the building itself: a river-city museum holding meditations on the waters that carry civilizations. The installation extends the museum’s landmark Kiefer exhibition into a long, contemplative encore.

Admission to the hall is free. Stand in the middle, look up, and take your time.

‘Anselm Kiefer: Becoming the Sea’ is in Sculpture Hall at the Saint Louis Art Museum, 1 Fine Arts Drive. Details at slam.org.
