Spotlight on Tango Brings the Passion of Buenos Aires to MIM This Sunday

Get ready to feel the passion of Buenos Aires right here in Phoenix! This Sunday, October 11, the Musical Instrument Museum invites everyone to Spotlight on Tango, a full day celebrating the music, dance, and culture of Argentine tango from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The day begins with a fascinating curator talk, “Three Instruments That Made Tango,” where MIM’s curator for Latin America and the Middle East, Daniel Piper, reveals how the guitar, the bandoneón, and the violin gave tango its unmistakable sound, traveling from the working-class neighborhoods of Buenos Aires to the great concert halls of Argentina and Europe. You’ll even see historic Argentine tango instruments from the museum’s own collection.

Then dive deeper with short film screenings about tango culture and a Q&A with ethnomusicologist and filmmaker Jennie Gubner, followed by a family-friendly tango dance workshop with Daniela Borgialli. The grand finale? A live tango performance by El SurCo, led by Argentine tango guitarist Maxi Larrea, with dazzling dance demonstrations by Borgialli.

The event is included with paid museum admission and free for members, with activities on a first-come, first-served basis. Between sessions, enjoy lunch at Café Allegro and browse the Museum Store for tango LPs and CDs to keep the rhythm going at home.

Don’t miss this joyful celebration of one of the world’s most beloved musical traditions at the Musical Instrument Museum, 4725 E. Mayo Blvd, Phoenix.
