The Outside Expands: New Museum Reveals 36 Artists for Its Biggest Triennial Yet

New York’s art scene just got a thrilling preview of the future. The New Museum has announced the artist list for the 2027 New Museum Triennial, titled The Outside Expands, on view February 4 through May 16, 2027.

Founded in 2009, the Triennial is the only recurring international exhibition in New York City devoted to early-career artists from around the world. This sixth edition will be its most international ever: 36 artists and collectives from 34 different countries, the widest global representation in the exhibition’s history.

The 2027 Triennial marks several exciting firsts. It will be the first Triennial held in the museum’s newly opened OMA-designed expansion, which added 60,000 square feet of exhibition space, and the first curated by an international team: New Museum curator Vivian Crockett alongside Isabella Rjeille, a curator at MASP in São Paulo, Brazil.

The title draws inspiration from X Galeria, a 1979 urban intervention by the Brazilian collective 3NOS3, whose message proclaimed that “what is inside remains, what is outside expands.” The exhibition celebrates artists who push beyond borders — of territory, identity, gender, and sexuality — to imagine brighter futures.

Among the named participants are Virginia Chihota, Mandy El-Sayegh, Jesús Hilario-Reyes, Josi, Jota Mombaça, Agnes Questionmark, and Sin Wai Kin. The full list spans regions from Australia to South Africa, India to Mexico, and South Korea to Spain.

After a five-year pause, the return of the Triennial is a joyful milestone for Lower Manhattan — and for art lovers everywhere. Mark your calendars for February 2027.
