At the Hyde Street Pier, San Francisco keeps a fleet of floating history – and families can walk its decks. The San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park preserves the square-rigged sailing ship Balclutha (1886), the side-wheel ferry Eureka and other historic vessels, where kids can haul lines at ranger programs, sing sea chanteys and imagine life on a Gold Rush-era voyage around Cape Horn.
The park’s visitor center in a former cannery warehouse adds hands-on exhibits about the city’s seafaring roots, and Aquatic Park’s beach and promenade stretch right beside the pier. It’s living history at kid height: creaking decks, towering masts and the whole bay as backdrop.
