The biggest island in San Francisco Bay is also one of its best family days out. Ferries from Tiburon and the city land at Ayala Cove, where Angel Island State Park spreads picnic lawns, a cafe and the start of trails that circle the island with bay views at every turn. Families rent bikes to ride the perimeter road – about five mostly gentle miles – or hike up Mount Livermore for a picnic at the top of the bay.
History rides along: the Immigration Station museum tells powerful stories older kids absorb deeply, while little ones mostly remember the boat, the beach and the ice cream. No cars, no hurry – just an island that feels a world away from the city it faces.
