Hidden among redwoods in the Oakland hills, Chabot Space & Science Center is the Bay Area’s home observatory: three giant telescopes – including the historic 1883 refractor ‘Leah’ – open free to the public on Friday and Saturday nights, when families line up to see Saturn’s rings with their own eyes.
By day, planetarium shows, a Challenger-era space legacy and hands-on astronomy exhibits fill the visit, plus trails through Joaquin Miller Park right outside. Chabot’s family overnights and telescope viewings turn kids into stargazers for life – and the redwood setting makes even the drive feel like liftoff into another world.
