Briscoe Museum Opens a Powerful New Exhibition Celebrating Revolutionary Women of Texas and Mexico

Starting October 15, the Briscoe Western Art Museum invites San Antonio to meet the women who shaped history — not as witnesses, but as participants, survivors, artists, activists and revolutionaries. Kathy Sosa: Revolutionary Women of Texas and Mexico brings together more than 30 works by San Antonio artist Kathy Sosa, celebrating the soldaderas, saints and subversives who built and transformed the Texas-Mexico borderlands.

Self-taught and inspired by the rich mestizaje — the blending of peoples, languages and cultures — of the borderlands, Sosa began painting at age 48 and has spent two decades telling these stories through painting, mixed media and public art. Drawing on her book Revolutionary Women of Texas and Mexico: Portraits of Soldaderas, Saints and Subversives, the exhibition gives these women the presence they deserve.

The show also marks the reopening of the Briscoe’s Women of the West Gallery after renovation, and joins a powerful season at the museum alongside Tejano Legacy: Another American Origin Story and Selena Forever | Siempre Selena. A free exhibition unveiling and reception takes place October 15 — the perfect night to celebrate the women who made Texas what it is.
