San Antonio’s Historic Market Square is about to get a joyful new coat of color. On Thursday, October 15, Centro de Artes Gallery opens Mercado/Material, a vibrant exhibition that turns the everyday magic of the market into bold, playful works of art. The show runs through March 7, 2027 and is completely free to visit.
Curated by Mia Lopez, Mercado/Material brings together more than a dozen contemporary artists from New York City, Chicago and across Texas. They transform familiar objects — fruit cups, grocery items, piñatas and hand-lettered market signs — into eye-catching artworks that celebrate the colors, traditions and daily rituals of Latinx culture, while exploring themes of identity, community, work and consumerism. The show even gives a loving wink to the Pop art movement, echoing how Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg turned commercial objects into icons.
The location is no coincidence: the exhibition was inspired by the very history of Centro de Artes and Market Square, once an agricultural marketplace where immigrants from around the world brought global flavors to San Antonio. Even better, the exhibition marks Centro de Artes’ 10th anniversary — a decade of free, accessible art celebrating the transnational Latino experience.
The opening reception is Thursday, October 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. The gallery is free and open to the public Wednesday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at 101 S. Santa Rosa in downtown San Antonio.
