Detroit Opera Opens Its 2026–27 Season with Puccini’s ‘Tosca’ November 1–7

Detroit Opera raises the curtain on its 2026–27 season with one of the most gripping thrillers in all of opera: Puccini’s Tosca, at the Detroit Opera House on November 1, 5 and 7, 2026. The production opens a season-long exploration of faith that continues with Fiddler on the Roof in March and Philip Glass’s Satyagraha in April.

South African soprano Masabane Rangwanasha makes her Detroit Opera — and role — debut as Floria Tosca, opposite tenor Nathan Granner as Cavaradossi and bass-baritone Alfred Walker as the villainous Scarpia. Music Director Roberto Kalb, whose contract was recently extended through 2030, conducts the Detroit Opera Orchestra, Chorus and Youth Chorus.

Director Louisa Proske’s staging relocates Puccini’s tale of love, jealousy and political repression from Napoleonic Rome to an authoritarian state in the mid-20th century — a setting that sharpens the opera’s timeless questions about power and conscience. Tickets are at detroitopera.org.
