Here’s one of metro Detroit’s best family deals: kids can explore one of America’s greatest art museums for free. Residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties receive free general admission to the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the museum’s family programming makes it easy to turn a visit into an adventure.
Families can join drop-in art-making workshops, draw in the galleries with provided materials, and follow kid-friendly trails through knights’ armor, Egyptian treasures and the famous Diego Rivera Detroit Industry murals. The museum’s collection of more than 65,000 works means there is always a new wing to discover — and Friday nights, when the DIA stays open until 9 p.m., have a lively, festival feel.
The DIA is at 5200 Woodward Avenue in Midtown Detroit, open Tuesday through Sunday. Program calendars and family resources are at dia.org.
