Detroit Zoo in Winter: Why Cold Days Are Secretly the Best Days

Here’s a local secret: the Detroit Zoo in winter is wonderful. The crowds thin, the paths quiet down, and cold-weather stars — polar bears, red pandas, snow monkeys, tigers and wolves — are at their most active, frisking in weather that feels like home.

Bundle the kids up and build the day around the warm buildings: the Polk Penguin Conservation Center, the Holden Reptile Conservation Center and the Great Apes of Harambee. Between stops, keep an eye out for the zoo’s winter residents enjoying the snow — and time your visit to end with Wild Lights on the evenings it runs (November 21, 2026–January 3, 2027).

The Detroit Zoo is open year-round at 8450 West 10 Mile Road in Royal Oak, with shorter winter hours. Dress in layers and embrace it: winter is the zoo’s most peaceful season.
