Detroit Film Theatre: Cinema as It Was Meant to Be Seen, at the DIA

Tucked inside the Detroit Institute of Arts is one of America’s great movie rooms. The Detroit Film Theatre, presenting films since 1974, screens the best of world cinema — new independent releases, restored classics, documentaries and festival favorites — in a gorgeous 1,100-seat auditorium that makes every screening feel like an occasion.

The DFT’s programming is the opposite of the algorithmic feed: human-curated seasons that might pair a Cannes prizewinner with a silent classic and live accompaniment. For Detroit film lovers, Friday and Saturday nights in that red-velvet room are a ritual older than most of the audience.

The theater is at 5200 Woodward Avenue, inside the DIA. Current schedules, series and tickets are posted at dia.org — check the calendar and make a night of it with dinner in Midtown.
