13 Languages, One Home: Community Artwork Takes Over the Denver Art Museum’s Atrium

What does “home” mean to you? At the Denver Art Museum, the answer comes in thirteen languages — and it’s absolutely beautiful. Rupprecht Matthies: ¿Being Home?, now on view in the museum’s Hirschfeld Atrium, is a radiant community-generated artwork that turns words into wonder.

Conceived by artist Rupprecht Matthies, who believes in the power of language and shared creative processes to bring people together, the installation transforms words into colorful mobiles and wall pieces that dance with light and meaning. Presented in thirteen languages — including Arabic, English, Karenni, and Spanish — the work weaves together the lived experiences of diasporic communities and all those who carry home in their hearts across borders.

Drawn from the museum’s own permanent collection and reconceived especially for the soaring atrium of the Martin Building, ¿Being Home? invites every visitor to see their own story reflected in its colors. Best of all, it’s included with general admission — a gift of art, language, and belonging for the whole Mile High City.

Come find your word, your language, your home.
