Battery Park City: An Open-Air Gallery on the Hudson

New Yorkers looking for art without a ticket line should head to Battery Park City, the green waterfront neighborhood on the west side of Lower Manhattan where sculptures, lawns and gardens share the same paths. Cared for by the Battery Park City Authority, its parks turn an everyday walk along the Hudson River into a slow visit to an open-air gallery.

Rockefeller Park is a perfect place to start: wide lawns, a large playground and several public art pieces made to be lived with, not just looked at, including colorful works that children climb around while the river glitters beyond the Esplanade. From there, the waterfront promenade links garden after garden, and landmarks such as the Irish Hunger Memorial rise quietly between office towers and apartment buildings.

The Authority’s Fall 2026 program guide keeps the neighborhood busy with free events from September through December, but the art itself needs no schedule: it is there at sunrise, at lunch hour and at golden hour. Bring a coffee, pick a bench, and let the city be the museum.
