Baltimore Rock Opera Society: The Loudest Art in Town

Nobody else in America does what the Baltimore Rock Opera Society does — because nobody else thought rock opera should be built by hand, by hundreds of volunteers, in Baltimore. Since 2009, BROS has staged all-original, full-scale rock operas: giant puppets, homemade spectacle, arena-sized choruses and stories that swing from sci-fi epics to mythic quests.

The productions are community theatre scaled to eleven — volunteer casts and crews of artists, musicians, engineers and neighbors building wonders out of foam, light and volume, then performing them with total conviction. It is the purest expression of Baltimore’s DIY arts spirit, and a BROS opening night feels like a city holiday.

Productions mount at venues around Baltimore. Watch for the next original epic at baltimorerockopera.org.
