OrchKids: The BSO Program Putting Instruments in Baltimore Children’s Hands

Some of Baltimore’s most joyful noise starts in its public school classrooms. OrchKids, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s flagship education program, gives city students free instruments, daily music instruction and a community built around playing together — before school, after school and in the summer.

The program was founded in 2008 under then-Music Director Marin Alsop, inspired by Venezuela’s El Sistema movement, and has grown into a nationally admired model of music as social change, serving students at sites across the city. Its young ensembles perform everywhere from school auditoriums to the Meyerhoff stage itself.

OrchKids concerts are free and open to the public — and few evenings in Baltimore end with a prouder audience.
