Houston gets a joyful burst of color and rhythm on Saturday, November 7, when Houston’s Got Bollywood – Bombay Express takes over Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park. The free performance, produced by Moksh Community Arts, runs from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. and promises an afternoon of pure celebration under the open sky.
A multigenerational cast leads the audience on a dance journey through the history of Bollywood film, blending folk dance, semi-classical movement, Bolly hop, Indian contemporary dance and Bollywood fusion. After an opening offering, the production travels from Mumbai, the city of dreams, to the golden fields of Punjab, through the color and rhythm of Rang and Raas and the Heartland Suite, and from temple traditions to the talkies of the South, before a full-circle finale that lands right back in Bollywood.
As with every Miller performance, admission is completely free. Covered-seat tickets can be reserved online starting Friday, November 6 at 10:00 a.m., with more held for in-person pickup at the box office an hour before showtime, and the famous hillside is always open for blankets and picnics. The show will also be livestreamed on Miller’s website, YouTube channel and Facebook page.
No knowledge of Bollywood or Indian culture is needed: the dazzling costumes, infectious music and sheer energy speak a universal language, and the family-friendly spectacle is made to delight children, teenagers and grandparents alike. It is the kind of afternoon that reminds Houston why free live performance in the park is one of the city’s happiest traditions.
