‘Quilts and Coverlets’: Whitework Treasures at the Saint Louis Art Museum

White on white, stitch by stitch: ‘Quilts and Coverlets: American Needlework in White,’ now at the Saint Louis Art Museum through April 18, 2027, gathers the museum’s exquisite collection of whitework bedcoverings made at the height of American neoclassicism in the early to mid-1800s.

What looks like serene simplicity is virtuoso labor — stuffed and corded quilting, fine embroidery and candlewicking that turn plain cotton into landscapes of shadow and texture, each piece a document of its maker’s skill, patience and authorship. Ceramics, printed fabrics and needlework tools join the display to reconstruct the world these textiles furnished.

In an age of fast everything, this is the quietest, most radical show in town.

‘Quilts and Coverlets’ is at the Saint Louis Art Museum, 1 Fine Arts Drive. Details at slam.org.
