St. Louis Symphony Orchestra: America’s Second-Oldest Symphony, Playing On

Founded in 1880, the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra is the second-oldest symphony orchestra in America — and under Music Director Stéphane Denève, the Grammy Award-winning SLSO plays like it is just getting started. Its home is Powell Hall in Grand Center, a 1925 movie palace turned concert hall in 1968 and fresh from a major expansion and reimagining, where the acoustic wraps every seat in warmth.

The 2026–27 season spans Denève’s heartfelt classics, superstar guests, film concerts, pops nights and community performances across the region — including the free season-opening concert on Art Hill that draws tens of thousands to Forest Park each September. The orchestra’s IN UNISON programs and St. Louis Symphony Chorus (celebrating its 50th anniversary season) deepen the civic embrace.

St. Louis has kept this orchestra for 146 years. One evening in Powell Hall explains why.

Powell Hall is at 718 North Grand Boulevard. Season calendar at slso.org.
