San Diego Symphony Launches ‘Beyond Borders’ Initiative: Two Orchestras, One Stage, and a Free Concert Under the Stars

Wonderful news for music lovers in San Diego! The San Diego Symphony has just launched Beyond Borders: North American Music Initiative, a beautiful project that uses music to bring together Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

The initiative builds on the orchestra’s long-standing work in Baja California and now stretches north with a brand-new partnership with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (OSM). And here is the best part: both orchestras share the same dynamic music director — Rafael Payare.

The first big celebration arrives October 29 and 30. On Thursday, October 29 at 7:30 p.m., Payare conducts the Montréal orchestra at Jacobs Music Center with a dazzling program: Samy Moussa’s Elysium, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto with superstar soloist Leonidas Kavakos, and Stravinsky’s complete The Firebird.

Then, on Friday, October 30 at 7:30 p.m., comes the grand finale: “Sound of Two Cities,” a free concert at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park. Musicians from San Diego and Montréal will share one stage for works by Bartók, Ravel, Prokofiev, and Respighi — an orchestra of breathtaking scale right on the San Diego Bay waterfront.

Free admission, world-class music, and a message of friendship across borders — what better way to close out October? Reserve your spot through the Symphony’s website, sandiegosymphony.org.
