San Diego Museum of Art Celebrates 100 Years with ‘Forging a Legacy,’ a Centennial Exhibition of Masterpieces

San Diego is celebrating a century of art! The San Diego Museum of Art in Balboa Park has opened Forging a Legacy: 15 Years of Landmark Acquisitions, a spectacular centennial exhibition now on view through May 31, 2027.

The show gathers more than 120 works from the over 14,500 pieces that have joined the museum’s collection in the past 15 years — a joyful walk through the institution’s growth since it opened its doors in 1926. Visitors will find legendary names side by side: Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Andy Warhol, John Singer Sargent, Jusepe de Ribera, Gabriele Münter, Lucas Cranach, Nick Cave, Richard Deacon, Cauleen Smith and many more.

Highlights include the extraordinary promised gift of Toni Bloomberg’s Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Modern collection, six engravings by Renaissance master Albrecht Dürer, a rare grouping of five South Asian paintings from a single Ramayana series, a wall devoted to historic Japanese woodblock prints, Chinese art ranging from a 14th-century screen to contemporary photography, and vibrant Latin American works by artists like Hugo Crosthwaite, Alfredo Jaar and Vik Muniz. From Renaissance Old Masters to German Expressionism, the exhibition shows a collection as diverse and welcoming as the city it serves.
