World Premiere Musical ‘GRIM’ Brings Laughs and Heart to La Jolla Playhouse

San Diego theater fans are in for a treat: La Jolla Playhouse is presenting the world premiere of GRIM, a brand-new musical about the Grim Reaper’s daughter, Diana, who is expected to take over the family business — until she falls in love with Josh, a lovably dorky human.

Described as irreverent, hilarious and heartbreaking all at once, the show arrives with a powerhouse creative team: direction by Sammi Cannold (How to Dance in Ohio), book by Joey Orton and Brad Silnutzer, music and lyrics by Petro AP, Scott Hoying of Pentatonix, Orton & Silnutzer, and choreography by Tony Award winner Andy Blankenbuehler (Hamilton). The cast includes Paolo Montalban as Grim, Akshara Gunda as Diana and Mateo Lizcano as Josh.

There is nothing like catching a brand-new musical in its very first production — and there is no better place for it than La Jolla Playhouse, one of America’s great homes for new work.

Performances begin October 27, 2026, at the Mandell Weiss Theatre, 2910 La Jolla Village Drive, La Jolla. Showtimes are Tuesday through Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m., and Sunday at 1 and 7 p.m. Tickets and details are available at lajollaplayhouse.org.
