Thousands of Butterflies Take Flight at Desert Botanical Garden This Fall

Phoenix, get ready for pure magic on wings. This fall, Desert Botanical Garden is home to Fall Butterflies, a living exhibit filled with thousands of free-flying Southwestern butterflies — including the stunning monarch — dancing through the desert air.

Visitors get an up-close and personal experience with these winged beauties: watch them flutter from flower to flower, learn about each stage of their fascinating life cycle, and discover simple actions we can all take to help protect them. It is one of those rare outings that delights toddlers, teens, and grandparents in equal measure.

The experience blooms even brighter with Glass in Flight, a companion art installation by Tucson-based artist Alex Heveri. With more than 30 years of experience, Heveri creates large-scale steel-and-glass sculptures from thick slabs of colored glass, cut, shaped, and set into radiant works that glow among the Garden’s trails.

Fall Butterflies runs daily this fall at Desert Botanical Garden, 1201 N. Galvin Parkway. Stroll the trails in the morning light, camera in hand — this is autumn in the Sonoran Desert at its most joyful.
