“Shimmer: Dreaming the Posthuman” Opens at the Frist Art Museum

Get ready to dream big, Nashville! The Frist Art Museum has just opened Shimmer: Dreaming the Posthuman, a breathtaking exhibition that invites visitors to reimagine our connection with the planet and all the creatures we share it with.

On view from September 25, 2026 through January 3, 2027 in the museum’s Ingram Gallery, Shimmer brings together works by 17 contemporary artists who blend traditional materials — from deer hides to glass — with cutting-edge tools like CGI, augmented and virtual reality, motion capture, and generative software.

The show features captivating works by acclaimed artists including Ian Cheng, Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg, Marguerite Humeau, Josèfa Ntjam, Jacolby Satterwhite, and Saya Woolfalk. Their pieces explore the beautiful entanglement between humans, animals, and nature, offering joyful and thought-provoking new ways of seeing the world.

Curated by Frist Chief Curator Mark Scala, the exhibition is the final installment in his celebrated series of contemporary shows at the Frist — making this a must-see moment for art lovers. The museum’s historic art deco building is the perfect backdrop for this journey between dreams and reality, the physical and the virtual.

Plan your visit this fall and let your imagination soar at the Frist!
