There are many ways to see Los Angeles, and the Getty Center is shining a spotlight on five of the most soulful. The J. Paul Getty Museum presents Every Minute Is History: Five Views of Los Angeles, on view from September 1, 2026 through January 3, 2027 — a joyful celebration of the photographers who captured the city’s heart during the second half of the 20th century.
Featuring the work of Laura Aguilar, Reynaldo Rivera, George Rodriguez, Patssi Valdez, and Ricardo Valverde, the exhibition reveals how these artists expanded our vision of the built environment and the cultural landscape of LA — and the vibrant Latino/a and Chicano/a communities that helped shape it. Blending documentary, conceptual, and experimental approaches, their photographs are enduring records of family, identity, creativity, and belonging.
Emerging during and after the Chicano Liberation Movement of the 1960s, each photographer brings a deeply personal eye: Rodriguez documented celebrity culture and collective struggles of Mexican Americans, Valverde chronicled his family and East LA community, and together they challenged conventional narratives with tenderness and power.
Located in the Museum West Pavilion at the Getty Center, the show pairs beautifully with the companion exhibition Instante/revelación: Moments in Mexican Photography — a double bill of art and culture that makes autumn the perfect time to visit. As always, admission to the Getty Center is free.
