Respighi in Technicolor: The DSO Plays ‘Fountains & Pines of Rome’ October 15–17

Few pieces show off an orchestra — and a hall — like Respighi’s Roman tone poems. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra performs Fountains & Pines of Rome October 15–17, 2026 at Orchestra Hall, with Music Director Jader Bignamini on the podium and pianist Alexandra Dariescu joining the program.

Respighi paints the Eternal City in sound: dawn fountains, umbrella pines silhouetted against the sky, and a Roman legion marching up the Appian Way in one of classical music’s great crescendos. In Orchestra Hall’s famously warm acoustics, those pines all but rustle.

Performances are Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday at 10:45 a.m. and Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center, 3711 Woodward Avenue. Tickets at dso.org.
