An Avant-Garde Playground of Ink: “X Marks the Spot” Lights Up the DMA Through November 8

Good news for art lovers: the Dallas Museum of Art is hosting X Marks the Spot: Contemporary Screenprinting at Brand X Editions through November 8 — and the clock is ticking on this one.

The exhibition celebrates more than 40 years of the legendary New York print studio Brand X Editions, which since 1979 has teamed up with some of the biggest names in contemporary art. On the walls: larger-than-life screenprints by KAWS, Helen Frankenthaler, Rashid Johnson, Deborah Kass, Mickalene Thomas, Donald Sultan, Emily Mae Smith and Loie Hollowell — including a new work created for the Dallas presentation.

It is a master class in the expressive power of screenprinting. One standout, Rashid Johnson’s Untitled Large Mosaic (2025), layers a staggering 293 colors with collage — proof that this technique is as inventive as it gets.

Organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and curated for the DMA by Emily Friedman, the show arrives just in time for one last free visit: Sunday, November 1 is the final DMA FREE First Sunday before the exhibition closes on November 8. The museum at 1717 North Harwood is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with free general admission — a perfect happy-news plan from Happy City News.
