Dallas has just a few days left to walk in the footsteps of one of the most inspiring leaders of modern times. Mandela: The Official Exhibition closes on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at the African American Museum, Dallas, in historic Fair Park — and admission is completely free.
Presented in collaboration with Round Room Live and the Royal House of Mandela, and authenticated by the Mandela family, this major international exhibition traces Nelson Mandela’s extraordinary journey through four immersive galleries filled with personal artifacts, archival photographs, multimedia installations and interactive experiences, including objects never before seen outside South Africa.
The journey begins with The Early Years (1918–1941), rooted in tradition and identity in rural South Africa. It continues with The Struggle Is My Life (1941–1964), The Prison Years (1964–1990) — 27 years of defiance on Robben Island — and Freedom & Healing a Nation (1994–2013), celebrating his presidency, forgiveness and lasting legacy. Along the way, visitors can see Mandela’s personal trench coat, his presidential suit and watch, and the iconic Madiba batik shirt.
The museum, at 3536 Grand Avenue, recommends the exhibition for ages 11 and up. Happy City News suggests going this week: it is a joyful, hopeful reminder of resilience, courage and reconciliation — and once November 1 passes, Dallas will have missed it.
