The Chicago Cultural Center: A Free Palace of Art and Glass

You don’t need a ticket to step into one of Chicago’s most breathtaking buildings. The Chicago Cultural Center — a Beaux-Arts landmark completed in 1897 — opens its doors free every day, inviting everyone to wander its marble staircases, galleries, and the world’s largest Tiffany glass dome.

The 38-foot dome of Preston Bradley Hall glows with more than 30,000 pieces of Favrile glass, a crown above free concerts, dance performances, art exhibitions, and festivals that fill the calendar year-round. The smaller but equally stunning Garland Room dome, with its fish-scale glass pattern, is a secret worth seeking out.

It’s perfect for art lovers, architecture fans, and anyone who wants a beautiful, air-conditioned pause in the Loop. Tip: check the center’s free event calendar before you go — a lunchtime concert under the Tiffany dome is one of Chicago’s most joyful experiences, and it costs absolutely nothing.
