Grab your brush and your curiosity: the Las Vegas Natural History Museum is turning guests into archaeologists for a day with Archaeology: Out of Context, a hands-on family program happening Saturday, October 24, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The adventure begins with a quick lesson in how real archaeologists work — and why context matters just as much as the artifact itself. Where an object is found, what it’s found with, and how it’s recorded can make the difference between a mystery and a story. Then things get delightfully messy: participants will tackle a dig gone wrong, using observation and evidence to piece together what happened and identify an artifact despite missing or mixed-up information.
It’s part puzzle, part detective work, and all discovery. Along the way, young explorers (ages 8 and up are recommended) see how careful notes, maps, and documentation turn ordinary objects into windows on people and the past — and what’s lost when those details aren’t recorded.
Best of all, the program is included with museum admission or membership, so families can make a full day of it exploring the museum’s dinosaur galleries, marine life exhibits, and desert wildlife. Supplies are limited and participation is first come, first served, so plan to arrive early.
