David Hockney’s Immersive “Bigger & Closer” Comes to Houston in 2027

Wonderful news for Houston’s art lovers: the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston has announced it will host David Hockney: Bigger & Closer (not smaller & further away), a breathtaking immersive video exhibition celebrating the life and work of the legendary British artist. The show opens on Sunday, March 7, 2027, and remains on view through Monday, September 6, 2027 — and it will be the U.S. debut of this spectacular production.

Imagine stepping inside the world of one of the most beloved artists of the last sixty years. The central work is a giant projection across four walls and the floor, filling the entire space with sixty years of Hockney’s trademark imagery — from his famous swimming pools to his colorful landscapes — accompanied by a soundtrack from composer Nico Muhly, with narration by the artist himself.

The exhibition premiered in London in 2023 at Lightroom, the technology-driven exhibition space’s inaugural show, and has since traveled to Manchester, Shenzhen and other locations. Now Houston gets its turn — the first major presentation of the artist in the city since the MFAH’s beloved 2021 exhibition Hockney – Van Gogh: The Joy of Nature. The immersive experience will be accompanied by other treasured Hockney works, including the video piece The Four Seasons: Woldgate Woods and a selection of his works on paper.
