This weekend is a double celebration at Fernbank Museum of Natural History. The giant-screen film “Guardians of the Wild” premieres on October 10, and the brand-new special exhibit The Secret World of Elephants opens the very same day — two heartwarming adventures that invite families to see the natural world with fresh eyes.
“Guardians of the Wild” takes viewers on a globe-spanning mission to save some of the planet’s most endangered species. In the Galápagos Islands, audiences meet Big Bertha, a 150-year-old giant tortoise, and the dedicated rangers of the Charles Darwin Research Station whose breeding program has returned thousands of tortoises to the wild. Then the journey continues to the Australian Alps with the feisty Tasmanian devil, and to Africa, where conservationists are giving black rhinos a second chance through innovative protected sanctuaries.
Right outside the theater, The Secret World of Elephants reveals the remarkable abilities, intelligence, and hidden lives of Earth’s largest land animals — and opening day comes with a party. The Elephant Extravaganza on October 10 fills the museum with elephant-themed activities for the whole family, making the debut of this special exhibit a full-day experience.
“The importance of conservation work and habitat restoration is something Fernbank has been passionate about for years,” said Dr. Bobbi Hohmann, VP of Programming & Collections, as the museum continues its mission of protecting its 65-acre old-growth Fernbank Forest for future generations.
Exhibits and giant-screen films are included with daytime general admission and with CityPASS. Tickets purchased at FernbankMuseum.org are discounted from $23.95 to $27.95, and members enjoy free general admission. Fernbank is located at 767 Clifton Road NE in Atlanta, just minutes from Midtown and downtown Decatur.
