Atlanta’s Own Golf Legend Shines in ‘Fair Play: The Bobby Jones Story’ at the Atlanta History Center

Long before Atlanta became the sports capital of the South, a young Atlantan named Bobby Jones was already making history on the world’s fairways — and his remarkable story is waiting for you at the Atlanta History Center.

The exhibition Fair Play: The Bobby Jones Story celebrates the life of one of the greatest golfers of all time, right in his hometown. In 1930, Jones achieved something no one else ever had: he swept all four major championships of his era — the U.S. Open, the U.S. Amateur, The Open Championship, and The Amateur Championship. Journalist O.B. Keeler was so amazed he called it “the Impregnable Quadrilateral” — what we now know as golf’s Grand Slam.

But Jones’s legacy goes far beyond trophies. The Atlanta native co-founded Augusta National Golf Club and helped create The Masters, the tournament that still puts the South in the global spotlight every spring. Through artifacts, historic photographs, and personal stories, the exhibition paints a vivid portrait of an athlete remembered as much for his sportsmanship as for his swing.

It’s a joyful trip through Atlanta sports history the whole family can enjoy. Head to the Atlanta History Center in Buckhead — open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — and discover how one Atlantan’s grace and talent changed a game forever.
