The Alliance Theatre is making Atlanta history this month with the Atlanta debut of MEXODUS, a thrilling hip-hop musical about the road to freedom, on stage October 2 through 16 at the Coca-Cola Stage.
Created by Brian Quijada and Nygel D. Robinson, choreographed by Tony Thomas, and directed by David Mendizábal, MEXODUS uncovers a hidden chapter of American history: the thousands of enslaved people who fled across the Rio Grande to freedom in Mexico. This electrifying two-person tour de force blends live-looped music, storytelling, and raw theatricality, following a freedom seeker and an unlikely ally forging a bond that transcends their differences.
A winner of four Lucille Lortel Awards, including Outstanding Musical, MEXODUS arrives after an acclaimed Off-Broadway run. The New York Times called it an “electrifying theatrical experience,” and the New York Theatre Guide praised it as “bursting with infectious, buoyant energy.” The show runs about 90 minutes with no intermission and is best enjoyed by audiences 13 and up — history you don’t just learn, but feel.
