Nevada State Museum Celebrates the New Deal with ‘Through Rothstein’s Lens’ on Oct 15

October is a month of history, art and community at the Nevada State Museum, Las Vegas. The highlight is the “Common Threads” talk “Through Rothstein’s Lens: New Deal Photography and Nevada’s Transformation” on Thursday, October 15, from 4 to 5 p.m.

The conversation features Ann Rothstein-Segan, daughter of legendary photographer Arthur Rothstein, with historian Brodie Hefner, revisiting Rothstein’s 1940 commission in Nevada and how New Deal investments transformed the state. The talk arrives in the final days of the special exhibition “The New Deal in the New West: On the Road with Arthur Rothstein in Nevada,” which closes Sunday, October 18.

The exhibition presents 35 photographs of southern Nevada from 1940 alongside personal objects of the photographer — his camera, his tripod and even his camp stove — a rare window into the birth of modern Nevada. “Common Threads” is free with museum admission.

The museum is open Thursday through Monday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at 309 S. Valley View Blvd. Details at lasvegasnvmuseum.org.
