On the southern shore of the Tidal Basin stands a white marble rotunda of pure elegance: the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. Inspired by the Pantheon of Rome, it honors the author of the Declaration of Independence — and offers some of the dreamiest views in Washington, D.C.
Inside, a 19-foot bronze statue of Jefferson looks out over the water, surrounded by panels engraved with his writings on freedom and learning. Step back outside and the Tidal Basin stretches before you like a mirror, framing the memorial with cherry trees and, in the distance, the Washington Monument.
It is ideal for couples, photographers and quiet souls. Come in spring when the cherry blossoms turn the whole basin pink, or at dawn when mist floats over the water. Tip: the memorial is open 24 hours and free — the paddle boats on the Tidal Basin nearby are a joyful extra for families.
