The Tidal Basin: D.C.’s Pink Springtime Crown

Every spring, Washington, D.C. blushes pink — and the heart of that transformation is the Tidal Basin, a shimmering reservoir ringed by thousands of cherry trees. For a few glorious weeks, its two-mile shoreline becomes a tunnel of blossoms, and the whole city turns out to celebrate.

The trees were a 1912 gift from Japan, a symbol of friendship that has blossomed into the National Cherry Blossom Festival, one of the happiest events of the year. Beyond spring, the basin is a peaceful loop trail with knockout views of the Jefferson Memorial, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and the Washington Monument across the water.

It is perfect for families, romantic strolls and photo lovers. Rent a paddle boat to drift past the memorials, or walk the full loop at sunrise. Tip: blossom season is short — usually late March to early April — so check the bloom forecast, and come on a weekday morning to beat the crowds.
