Sondheim’s ‘A Little Night Music’ Opens the OTSL Festival

Send in the clowns — to Webster Groves. Opera Theatre of Saint Louis opens its 2027 Festival Season with Stephen Sondheim’s ‘A Little Night Music,’ running May 22–June 26, 2027, at the Loretto-Hilton Center, with conductor Michael Ellis Ingram leading the waltz-time jewel of Sondheim’s catalog.

The 1973 masterpiece — lawyers, actresses, countesses and one very long Scandinavian summer night, all turning on the three-quarter-time of second chances — is a natural festival opener: sophisticated, funny and quietly heartbreaking, crowned by ‘Send in the Clowns.’ In OTSL’s intimate house, sung in English with the company’s trademark clarity, every raised eyebrow lands.

The festival’s lawn-party evenings begin the moment this curtain rises.

‘A Little Night Music’ is at the Loretto-Hilton Center, Webster Groves. Tickets at opera-stl.org.
