It announces itself in neon a block long: FOX. The Fabulous Fox Theatre, opened in 1929 as a William Fox movie palace, is Grand Boulevard’s crown ā a 4,500-seat ‘Siamese Byzantine’ fantasy of minarets, marble and gilded elephants that restoration in 1982 returned to glory as one of America’s great touring houses.
Today the Fox hosts the biggest Broadway tours, concerts, comedy and dance in a room that is half the show: the mighty Wurlitzer organ rises from the pit, the lobby’s columns climb three stories, and every seat faces a proscenium built for spectacle. Generations of St. Louisans measure their cultural lives in Fox memories ā first musicals, first rock shows, first dates.
Arrive early. The building deserves its own applause before the curtain.
The Fabulous Fox is at 527 North Grand Boulevard. Calendar at fabulousfox.com.
