Get ready, Seattle: this December, the Seattle Art Museum is about to bloom indoors. DRIFT: Meadow opens on December 10, 2026, bringing a mesmerizing sky of animated flowers to the heart of downtown — and it stays through April 11, 2027.
The Netherlands-based studio DRIFT, founded in 2007 by Dutch artists Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta, is famous worldwide for experiential sculptures, installations, and performances that blend art and technology. Meadow is one of their most beloved works: an inverted meadow of robotic flowers suspended high above the ground.
Here is the magic: the flowers gently open and close in response to the viewer. You become the sun. Sensors translate your presence into an ever-changing choreography of color and light, since the colors of the flowers are inspired by the shades of the local flora — each installation is unique to its city. For Seattle, that means a Meadow that belongs to the Pacific Northwest.
More than a spectacle, DRIFT’s work invites us to reconnect with our planet and to marvel at nature’s quiet intelligence. After the gray days of winter set in, a luminous garden that reacts to every visitor sounds like exactly the kind of wonder Seattle needs. See you under the flowers.
