Superficial Matters: Eight Bay Area Artists Celebrate Identity and Material at the de Young

Good news for art lovers: the de Young Museum has a bright new reason to visit Golden Gate Park. Superficial Matters: Artists from the Svane Gift and Beyond, on view through June 4, 2027, brings together eight Bay Area artists who turn everyday materials — ceramic, photography, painting, silk scarves, even secondhand clothes — into powerful explorations of identity.

The exhibition is the third chapter in a series celebrating a generous $1 million gift from the Svane Family Foundation, which added 42 artworks by 30 emerging and midcareer local artists to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. This time the spotlight is on the beauty of surfaces: the artists blur the line between the superficial and the meaningful, the ornamental and the authentic.

Visitors will meet Christiane Lyons’s radiant painted portraits of layered womanhood, Wesaam Al-Badry’s striking photographs that refashion luxury silk scarves into niqabs, Maria A. Guzmán Capron’s soft sculptures made from recycled garments, Ruby Neri’s vibrant ceramics, Stephanie Syjuco’s playful photographic portraits, Lorna Simpson’s thought-provoking lithographs, Daisy May Sheff’s works, and Sunny A. Smith’s patchwork table turned into an easel.

Best of all: the show celebrates the creativity thriving right here in the Bay Area, proving that some of the most exciting contemporary art in the country is being made by our neighbors.
