Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro Returns to San Francisco Opera This Halloween Season

San Francisco’s fall arts calendar keeps getting better: San Francisco Opera has announced the return of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro to the War Memorial Opera House, with performances running October 31 through November 29, 2026. The beloved comedy continues the company’s 104th fall season in style.

German conductor Sebastian Weigle makes his San Francisco Opera debut leading the orchestra, chorus and cast. The revival stages the production created by the late Canadian director Michael Cavanagh, unveiled in 2019 as the first chapter of a multi-season Mozart-Da Ponte trilogy, now directed in revival by Shawna Lucey. The staging sets the opera in an American manor house during Mozart’s own era, with designs by Erhard Rom and costumes by Constance Hoffman.

The ensemble brings together exciting debuts and familiar favorites. Slovak bass Peter Kellner makes his company debut in the title role, alongside his real-life wife, soprano Slávka Zámečníková, as Susanna. Former Adler Fellows Olivia Smith and Simone McIntosh take on the Countess and Cherubino, with Thomas Mole, Maurizio Muraro, Catherine Cook and Alek Shrader rounding out the cast. Sung in Italian with English supertitles, the ten performances include evening and matinee dates.

Families and newcomers get a helping hand: a free 20-minute pre-opera talk begins 55 minutes before every performance, and the November 7 show will be livestreamed with 48-hour on-demand viewing for $25. Tickets are available at (415) 864-3330 and sfopera.com.
