Some of the best comeback stories on the planet are playing right now on the biggest screen in Balboa Park. The Nat (San Diego Natural History Museum) is showing “Back from the Brink: Saved from Extinction,” a giant-screen adventure narrated by Claire Danes that follows three animal species rescued from the edge of extinction.
The film travels from California’s Channel Islands, where the tiny island fox bounced back from fewer than 100 animals to thousands in the fastest species recovery ever recorded, to the misty mountains of China’s Yunnan Province, where former hunters now protect the golden monkey as park rangers. The journey ends on Christmas Island, where millions of red crabs march across the forest floor after scientists outsmarted an invasive ant.
Produced in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, the 39-minute film is a joyful reminder that problems created by people can also be solved by people.
The film screens daily at The Nat’s Giant Screen Theater through November 19 and is included with regular museum admission, so the whole family can pair it with five floors of nature, from dinosaurs to the “Washed Ashore” ocean sculptures.
