San Fernando Cathedral: The Soul of San Antonio

In the center of Main Plaza stands San Fernando Cathedral, the oldest continuously functioning religious community in Texas and one of the oldest cathedrals in the United States. Founded in 1731 by Canary Island settlers, its glowing facade has watched over San Antonio for nearly three centuries.

By day, visitors can admire the Gothic Revival interior, the stunning stained-glass windows, and the famous “San Antonio | The Saga” light show projected on the cathedral walls at night — a breathtaking video-art spectacle that tells the city’s history in light and sound, free for all to watch from the plaza.

The cathedral and Main Plaza are perfect for evening strolls, families, and anyone seeking a moment of beauty and reflection in the city’s heart. Tip: bring a blanket and arrive early for a good spot on the plaza lawn before the night’s light show begins.
