You don’t have to leave San Antonio to find wild Texas. Government Canyon State Natural Area protects more than 12,000 acres of rugged Hill Country landscape — canyons, springs, and juniper-oak woodlands — just a short drive northwest of downtown.
Over 40 miles of trails wind through the preserve, from easy family-friendly walks to challenging backcountry routes. Keep an eye out for white-tailed deer, armadillos, and the endangered golden-cheeked warbler. The park also preserves 100-million-year-old dinosaur tracks, a thrilling reward for young explorers.
It’s ideal for hikers, birdwatchers, mountain bikers, and families who love the outdoors. Tip: wear sturdy shoes, bring plenty of water (Texas heat is no joke), and check the park’s schedule — some areas open only on select days to protect wildlife. Arrive early on weekends.
