Market Square: The Colorful Heart of Mexican Culture

Just west of downtown, Historic Market Square — El Mercado — bursts with color, music, and flavor. It’s the largest Mexican market in the United States, and its open-air plazas and festive stalls have been celebrating Mexican heritage for generations.

Wander past more than a hundred locally owned shops and stalls selling handmade crafts, folk art, jewelry, and traditional clothing. On weekends the plazas come alive with live mariachi music, folkloric dancers, and the smell of fresh churros — it’s a joyful, family-friendly fiesta every day.

Market Square is ideal for souvenir hunters, food lovers, and anyone who wants to experience San Antonio’s Mexican-American soul. The square is free to explore and hosts festivals throughout the year. Tip: bring an appetite and comfortable shoes — you’ll want to browse every corner and try a little of everything.
