In 1924, Portland did something no American city had done: it founded a youth orchestra. A century later, the Portland Youth Philharmonic is still setting the standard — some 300 young musicians in five ensembles, performing at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall with a polish that fools radio listeners into thinking they’re hearing professionals.
Alumni fill orchestras across the country, but PYP’s mission is bigger than careers: its school concerts, peer mentoring and tuition assistance make classical music a birthright for Oregon kids, not a luxury. The annual Cushion Concerts introduce toddlers to the orchestra floor — instruments within crawling reach.
Hearing teenagers pour everything into Tchaikovsky is the most hopeful sound in Portland. America’s first youth orchestra remains one of its finest ideas.
