Alberta Arts District & Last Thursday: Portland’s Happiest Street Party

Alberta Street in Northeast Portland is what happens when a neighborhood decides art is a way of life. Fifteen blocks of galleries, murals, craft shops, food carts and music venues carry the Alberta Arts District — a historically Black commercial corridor whose culture today’s community fiercely celebrates and protects.

On the Last Thursday of each summer month, the street closes and becomes Portland’s happiest block party: artists line the sidewalks, drummers gather on corners, galleries throw open their doors and thousands stroll with ice cream in hand. It’s been running since 1997 and remains gloriously uncommercial.

Year-round, the district rewards wanderers — a new mural here, a pop-up gallery there, the scent of incense and tacos in the air. Alberta isn’t a museum; it’s art with a pulse.
